What is a Portable Oxygen Concentrator?

Portable oxygen concentrators make their own oxygen by removing nitrogen from atmospheric air. Our atmosphere air is composed of approximately 79% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. A portable oxygen concentrator concentrates the oxygen by separating the nitrogen from the oxygen. The oxygen is then filtered and stored within the device and available for breathing by the patient.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has identified a list of approved portable oxygen concentrators that can be used on board aircraft.
